My Own Darling,
I hoped to receive a letter from you this morning but there was not one, only one from home and one from Janet.
There was not much news from home. Vera has been bottling tomatoes and making plum jam. She has also been doing a spot of flag selling in aid of the Beckett Hospital. Getting quite active, these days, is she not? I suppose that it does relieve the monotony a bit for her.
Janet also told me about the flag selling. She also said that she was starting her music lessons again. I suppose you will hear all the above news when you hear from home.
I was hoping to go back on duty to-day but as I have now developed a septic thumb the doctor says no.
I was allowed up last Saturday and allowed to go out yesterday so I thought that they might allow me to do a spot of work to-day but it seems that as I get rid of one thing I develop another. Ah me! The trials of this life.
Kit is wanting me to do some shopping this morning and as the sun is shining beautifully I will find Sister and ask permission to go out. You see I have to get permission whilst I am still supposed to be off sick.
4 hours later
I am glad that I went out as I managed to get hold of various things which are now difficult to obtain. I got half-a-dozen stainless steel knifes. The ones which are usually being sold now are either those old fashioned steel ones or the new utility style. You would laugh if you could see the Utility knives. They look like potato peelers to me. I also got a saucepan! Now don’t laugh, as I suppose you will. As I said before these things are difficult to get. I suppose it will be some time before I want the saucepan but it is ready for when we do want it.
By the way Darling, you will be able to carry on your old job as “Chief Toaster” when you come home as I have bought a toasting fork.
Do you remember those evenings when you used to toast the scones by Vera’s fire?
Darling, how I am longing for your return – what a lot of time we have to make up.
No more now Dear, as I want this to catch the next post. When I have posted this I will have to get my bath and hop into bed for the rest of the day.
Au-Revoir my Darling and all my love. Yours ever, Grace xxxxxxxxx
