My Own Darling,

I am committing a great crime by starting to write this letter on duty.  The truth is that I have nothing to do for the next ten minutes so I thought I start this.  We are “taking-in” once again so I guess we shall have plenty to do during the coming week.  We are usually quite slack the first day.

I have received your letter dated October 14th.  The mail position has certainly improved this last fortnight.  I was very sorry to read that in future your air letters will have to be curtailed to one a fortnight.  I know that you will make up for then in your ordinary letters.  I look forward to your letters so much, Darling.

30-10-43

My letter writing was interrupted the other day by the telephone ringing and a voice at the other end saying “This is casualty speaking, we are sending you an acute appendix.”  We do not seem to have stopped taking cases for long, ever since.  However, I do not mind being busy.

Yesterday two more letters arrived from you.  One air-letter dated October 19th, and one airgraph dated Oct 15th.

Since I started this letter a friend arrived with a parcel for me.  As soon as I saw the parcel I guessed what was inside – yes Dear – the nuts.  Kit and I have just sampled them.  They taste good.  They arrived quite intact.  I must save some and take them home, when I go.  I know that Mother will want to make a cake and put some in when she sees them.  Thank you for them, Darling.

Kit and went to the pictures last night to see Bette Davis in “Watch on the Rhine”.  It was a good film and well acted.

Whilst I was out a phone call came for me.  It was Eric ringing me up.  He is actually home at last.  I can hardly believe it.  I do not suppose I shall get any extra time off but I shall try and get home for my day-off.

No more Darling, I still love you as much as ever and am still missing you dreadfully.  All my love, from Grace xxxxxxxxx

Grace's Grandfather, John Walker

 Over the last two or three weeks, Grace has been telling Stan about the deteriorating health of her Grandfather, John Walker.   John Walker was the father of Alice, Grace's mother.  He was born in 1864 in Cliffe Bridge, a small settlement just outside Barnsley, between Lundwood and Monk Bretton.  He started work as a miner, probably aged around 12, but in his early 20's he moved to work on the pit top, firstly as a labourer and later on the screens where coal was washed and sorted into size/grade.  By 1914 he had moved to work at Grimethorpe Colliery and became Screens Foreman, a job he held until his retirement. John married Elizabeth Ryder in August, 1887, and they had six children - Alice was their second child and the oldest of four girls. G. H. N. 31-7-43    My Very Own Darling, I was very pleased and thankful to receive your cable this morning.   Mother posted it on to me as soon as it arrived.   As I had not heard from you for some time I was getting very worried and I know your Mother was too.   A letter also arrived from your Mother this morning telling me that she had received your cable. Look after yourself, Darling. I have not much news for you from this part of the world.   Life is pretty much the same.   I am settled down to hospital routine once again.   In fact, I feel that my recent holiday is part of a dream now.   I feel that I have not been away from the place for two minutes. However, I have quite resigned myself to the fact that there will not be another break until after September.
