Grace seems to have got into a bit of a tangle with her letters to Stan.  On 3rd October she started an air letter that she finished on the 4th.  She also started a sea letter, which she didn't manage to finish until the 7th.  On the 7th, she at last received two letters from Stan, after a month of no mail at all.  She just had to reply straight away!  However, in this letter she says that she posted the sea letter "yesterday", which would have been the 6th ....

My Very Own Darling,

I was so very thrilled to receive two air letters from you this morning.  I had looked for a letter from you each and every day for the last month and then this morning two arrived!  When I read your letters Dear, you do not seem so far away from me.

Thank you for wishing me good luck Darling in my exam.  Your wish is sure to bring me luck.  Next week at this time it will all be over – and I shall be glad.

I, like you, feel very optimistic about the war now but I suppose it would be wiser if we did not “build castles in the air”.

How I am longing for the day when you will be by my side again, for ever.

Yes, Darling, I do agree with you when you say that we must have a nice garden – at the front of our house and our garden and our everything but thinking about these things makes me so impatient.

My Dear, I love you so much that at times I feel that I shall never be able to wait until the end of the war before seeing you again.

I suppose that we shall just have to wait though and that is all there is to it.  Well, not exactly “all there is to it” because whilst we are both writing we are standing the true test of love – absence – and planning our future together.

I posted an air-letter to you yesterday telling you all my news.  I am afraid there is not much of that these days.  As long as the world news continues to be good – that is the main thing.

As soon as I received your letters I wrote your Mother letting her know I had heard from you.  I hope that she has heard from you too.

By the way, I thought you might like to know that I have just finished making another table cloth for our home.

I will have to close now as I have not much space left.

I love you as much as ever my Darling and I know that you still love me.

No News from Stan

 The last we heard from Stan was on 6 September, when he was on a ship going back to North Africa.  What is happening to Stan and why are there no letters from him? Stan's record of his war service notes that from 5 - 19 September he "Attended No. 2 MEOCS - Found not suitable".  This was an officer selection process which, as we have seen, involved him travelling to North Africa - away from the active front - taking part in the selection process and then travelling back.  During this time there are no letters from Stan, so presumably they were not allowed to write. Stan was not promoted to be an officer.  He always liked to tell an amusing story and said of this experience that as part of the process he had to see a psychiatrist, who went through a word association test with him.  Stan said that he knew that he had failed when the psychiatrist said "Fish" and Stan's immediate answer was "Chips"! Grace's Grandfather, John Walker

 Over the last two or three weeks, Grace has been telling Stan about the deteriorating health of her Grandfather, John Walker.   John Walker was the father of Alice, Grace's mother.  He was born in 1864 in Cliffe Bridge, a small settlement just outside Barnsley, between Lundwood and Monk Bretton.  He started work as a miner, probably aged around 12, but in his early 20's he moved to work on the pit top, firstly as a labourer and later on the screens where coal was washed and sorted into size/grade.  By 1914 he had moved to work at Grimethorpe Colliery and became Screens Foreman, a job he held until his retirement. John married Elizabeth Ryder in August, 1887, and they had six children - Alice was their second child and the oldest of four girls.
