My Very Own Darling,

No more mail since last time I wrote, so I am not feeling too happy.  I am happy only when I get mail from a certain young lady from Nottingham & the more I get, the happier I am!!

Still I had a very pleasant surprise yesterday.  Along came a bundle of “Sth. Elmsall Times” & it was quite a thrill on looking through one of them to find you smiling at me from one of the pages.  You never told me you had been making a public appearance through the medium of the press!!

The most interesting item of news that has happened in the past few days is the opening of our unit canteen.  Actually we have taken over a cafe lock stock & barrels (filled).  We have an orchestra there, too, & it is all very nice.  Soldiering –de-luxe!  We had a classical concert there last night & a Sergt. Major of the Italian paratroops came along & gave us a few songs.  He had a grand baritone voice.

The high spot of the evening & quite a pleasant surprise was when the interpreter produced a photographer & we all had our photographs taken.  I am anxiously waiting the result.  I hope it is passable so that I can send you a copy along.

I went along to the opera again last Sunday & saw “La Traviata”.  I don’t know if you have heard any music from this loveliest of Verdi’s works, but the strings take the lead in most of the movements & you know how sentimental that type of music makes me!!

My chief regret when I go on these excursions is that you are not by my side. If that were so, Darling, my happiness would be complete.

Life this week seems to have been one round of pleasure, for besides the two entertainments mentioned above we have had three English picture shows besides, wot a life!

Well, Darling, the end of the paper is in view, so I must start to say “Goodnight”.  How I wish it could be one of those thrilling “goodnights” we used to bid each other as we snuggled in front of a blazing fire!  Instead, we’ve got to use our imaginations.  You have my love as always Darling.  Ever yours, Stan   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
