My Very Own Darling

It has been a real scorcher today and I have been in one of my irritable moods to-day!   The flies which seem to be breeding in thousands now have made things worse too.

It is beginning to grow twilight now and is much cooler & so I thought I would spend the after-dinner hour writing to you (we have been having dinner in the evening now for a couple of weeks now because of the heat.)

The dinner was exceptionally nice and we finished off with cherry pie, for now all the trees are loaded with them and if you take a walk along the road you can get as many as you like.  Jealous?

So a combination of a good dinner and a drop in the temperature has restored my good temper (You don’t know what a horrible bloke you’ve to deal with when I come home.  The lads in the office say you’ll have to take a firm stand with me!!  I think they are exaggerating a bit though).

So you are thinking of having a week end in London.  Wish I could come with you.    By the look of the news in our papers out here travelling must have become very hard now that they have cut off such a lot of trains.  According to the paper yesterday, I see on some trains, troops are being given first choice & then civilians can get on if there’s any room left.

How are the arrangements progressing for the visit to Edinburgh, by the way?  It shouldn’t be far from the date of your leave by the time this letter reaches you.

Last night by the way, I saw one of the funniest films I have seen for some considerable time – “My Sister Eileen” starring Rosalind Russell.  It was a laugh from start to finish.  If you have the opportunity to see it, I should certainly do so.  It is a real tonic.

And what gave you the impression that your letters were boring, Darling?  Far from it.  As I have often told you, they are the brightest spot in my whole life.  Everything you say or do is of interest to me, Dear, no matter how small it is.

I am pleased you still find so much to interest you in my letters, I am sure at times they are very stereotype.  But I love writing to you, for it is the next best thing to holding you in my arms and snuggling into a big chair, telling you all my thoughts and feelings.  Just so long as we don’t have to rely too much longer on this long distance love making!!  It isn’t quite as thrilling as the real thing is it?

So, Darling, be quick and kick all those troops of yours over on to the continent and once they get there I think the war will not take long to finish.

I am still loving you as much as ever Darling and just living for the day when I shall be able to take you in my arms & tell you how much I have missed you during these past months.

Always yours Stan   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Note - there is a letter from Grace, also sent today.  Scroll up on the main page to find it.
