My Very Own Darling,

Your letter describing your two days at Grimethorpe arrived last night.  You certainly seemed to have had a really lazy time.  Fancy spending so long in bed!  Good to tell I wasn’t around to drag you out walking or on a trip to Leeds or Barnsley!!  You were never allowed to spend so much time in bed when I was at home – rather it was the other way round; I wouldn’t let you go to bed.  Remember all those heavenly nights & mornings, Darling?

Your new cousin certainly has a nice name, anyway.  I love Elizabeth and Ann.

Talking about babies, by the way, we had a big event here yesterday.  My washer-woman gave birth to a child – her eighth, which isn’t bad going to say that she has been married only a little longer than 12 years & is only 31!!  As you can guess, however, she looks twice that age.

They are terrible people, these Italians, worse than rabbits!  I think the Interpreter hit the nail on the head the other day when he said in his quaint English that the Italian woman was “just a factory for children”.

I had a letter from Mother yesterday, too, telling me she had had a visit from you.  She said that you had given her one of your latest photos and that they were very good.  I am simply dying for mine to arrive.  One of the lads in my office had one of his wife arrive today which taken only three weeks to arrive, so I might not have to wait much longer.

I had a bit of exciting news today.  I am most probably going to have six days leave commencing on 12 May & there is every possibility that I may manage to spend it in NAPLES.  I really hope it comes off.

I am ready for some leave for its about 18 months since I had any, but I am not half so badly off as the bloke who I am going with – he’s had none for nearly four years.

So if it comes off, Darling, you can expect some long letters from me telling you all about Vesuvius and Pompeii.

Well, its getting late (10.30 p.m. to be precise) so I must begin to settle down for the night.

Before I leave you however, I have just room to tell the best girl in the world that she still has all my love – and will have to eternity. I have missed you so this past 18 months Darling.  I do love you so and am existing only for one joyful day – you know which one?

Always your own, Stan  xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
