My Own Precious Darling,
After two or three days of cold weather when a blustering wind blew lots of dust round and generally made things uncomfortable, I am pleased to say the sun is shining once more and (going back to Sunday School days) “all is calm and bright” as I sit here in my favourite lunchtime haunt amongst the rocks.
So you are “having a go at making some Baby clothes”, eh? You made me go all hot & cold when I read about it!! As the soldier once said “This ‘ ere wireless be a wonneful thing!!” However, there‘s nothing like getting your hand in Darling. You never know when the knowledge may come in handy!
That’s one thing I am very proud of you for my Dear. You are a very handy sort of person in those sort of directions, not like some useless individuals one used to meet! Of course there are lots more and important things which make me love you more than any other girl in the world, but you’d only blush if I started recounting them – so I won’t bother.
I’ve just finished another book by the way, which I found very amusing. Its a satire on the state of England in the first days of the war & is called “Put Out More Flags”. The writer is Evelyn Waugh – a pal of Randolph Churchill's. It was very funny in parts.
I think it's a good idea if we exchange views on books, don’t you, for besides other things it gives one an insight into a person’s make-up if one knows his choice of reading matter.
And I suppose really we have a lot to learn about each other even yet. You never know, if you really knew everything about me you might not love me half as much as you do now! I don’t think there’s much fear of that, though Darling, is there? There certainly isn’t as far as I am concerned.
I am very pleased to hear that the photograph arrived and that you liked it. I thought it would show you that this hard (?) existence had not got me down altogether! You did very well to get a sea letter in ten days. Things are certainly looking up! Now I am counting the days to the arrival of your photograph. Like you, I can’t have too many to look down and smile at me.
It’s a horrible life having to be satisfied with letters and photographs isn’t it? Since I shall just have to delve a bit deeper and pull out a bit more of that substance called patience. I never knew I had so much of it.
Reading back this seems to be a very scrappy effort, but that’s perhaps because I’ve had umpteen interruptions in the process.
However, Darling, it will show you that I am still caring for you as much as ever and loving you terribly.
Until that happy day when we shall be together again. Keep all my love.
Yours Stan xxxxxxxx
