My Very Own Darling,
I’ve just come in from the cinema after having seen Leslie Howard’s film “Pimpernel Smith”. It’s 10.30 p.m. but so hot that I know it will take me a long time to get off to sleep, even if I try. I’m not going to try, however, I’ll write this letter to you and then read a book. I shall just drop off to sleep then.
When I say that today has been a good day you will automatically guess that I have had a letter from you. At the time you wrote it you were in a flurry of packing ready for your holidays. I was wondering how you managed to get all your luggage home. I remember there was usually enough when you came home for five days leave, never mind 30! Remember how I used to chaff you about the case being heavy as we walked through Doncaster? Wish I had had the opportunity of carrying it this time.
So you changed your mind and decided to go to Edinburgh after all. As you remark – just like a woman. A mere man will never be able to fathom their workings! Whilst on this subject I must pause to pull your leg about your spelling. After all, I think the bloke who’s going to marry you should have some privilege in this direction!
After saying that, I am glad I am not within striking distance, for I know I should have got a smack behind the ear for that crack, shouldn’t I? Do you think you’ll be much good at husband beating, Darling?
But to become serious once more, by the time this letter reaches you it won’t be any use wishing you a good time, for the holiday will be over, but I am sure that unless Edinburgh has changed since I spent a few days there, you will have had a good time alright. How I wish I were with you Darling!
I am so looking forward to our first holiday together after the war. I hope, personally that if things go alright that it will be our honeymoon. Do you think it might be Dear? Ah me, that would be delightful, wouldn’t it? Have you got any plans as to where you want to spend it, Angel?
Well, space is short again
& so I must start saying “goodnight”.
It always does take me a long time to say that one word, doesn’t
it. However, Darling, imagine that I am
holding you close as I used to do & kissing you as I whisper
“Goodnight”. Hope your imagination’s
working! Always yours, Stan xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
