A line in Stan’s service record reads: "21 February, 1943 – proceeded to Port of Embarkation"
This letter was written the night before the unit left for the port.

New address

Saturday evening

My Very Own Darling,

The time for the real parting has come, my Dear, & so if this letter proves to be the last for some weeks, you won’t worry & begin to think that I have forgotten about you, will you.  That will be far from the truth, Darling, as I am sure you know.  While I am away my one thought will be of the day when I shall return to you &, as they say in the fairy stories, “live happily ever after”.  What a day that will be!!

I am a bit disappointed that I have not had a letter from you since Tuesday, but it will not be your fault, I know, but the so-and-so post office to blame again.  Now, goodness knows when I shall hear from you again.  I know, however, that you will be thinking of me, Angel, & working for that home which one day we hope to share.  All I can pray for is that that day will not be too far distant.

When you do hear from me you won’t forget to write & tell Mother, will you?  She has promised to do the same when she hears.  By that means you will both be sure of having some news, won’t you?

I think it would be a good idea if you started numbering your letters & then when I get a batch from you I shall know which one to read first.  I will number mine too.  Another good point about that is that if any get lost I shall know which they are.

My dear, I could go on writing all night, but time is beginning to get short & there is a lot to do.

Remember me to your Mother & Father & Vera next time you write home, won’t you.

Don’t worry about me, too much will you, Darling.  I shall be alright.  There is everything in the world to persuade me to come back all in one piece!!! – and that everything is you.

Keep my love during the months that are to come, won’t you.  I shall be counting each day that passes & realising that each one is one day nearer to a complete & lasting life with you.

Well, Cheerio for now, & let’s hope it won’t be long before I get a letter from you & you another one from me.

All my love, my Angel.  Yours forever, Stan xxxxxxx
