Grimethorpe (44)
Friday, July 23rd
My Own Darling,
Having had a rather busy day I thought that I would write a few lines to you.
This morning Kit and I went down the village and did the weekly shopping and Kit went home on the 1 p.m. bus. She might be coming over again on Monday as I think that your Mother is going to sell Kit her bike. Your Mother did offer it to Wendy Carter however, so we are waiting until to-morrow before we shall know definitely.
Kit and I went to Sports Day on Wednesday and met Mrs Carter and Wendy.
The weather was nice and in all enjoyed ourselves. Janet’s sewing was being exhibited. John had a very busy time pointing out to us all the senior boys and especially the great “Doctor Sash”. I expect your Mother will give you all the details.
Last night Kit and I paid another visit to Grimethorpe Empire Palace. We saw “Severn Sweethearts”. It was quite well acted considering how far fetched the picture was.
After Kit had gone this afternoon I had to give a good clean everywhere ready for Mother & Dad coming back to-morrow. If the weather has been as nice at Blackpool as has been her they will have had a good week.
Saturday
I thought that I would finish writing your letter Darling before I retired for the night.
I went with your Mother this morning to Warde Aldam Hospital. She had her varicose vein injected. It appears to be a very nice little hospital.
We then made our way to Mrs Carters. Your Mother took me past Mr Moseley’s* house and Mr Moseley was coming down the drive on his bicycle. He stopped to speak to your Mother and I was introduced to him. He seemed very nice and appears much younger than I thought he was.
When we got to Mrs Carter's she was out so we sun bathed for half an hour hoping that she would not be long.
However, we had to go as we wanted to catch the 12.30 p.m. bus. We met Mrs Carter just before we arrived at the bus station and she decided that they would get Wendy a new bike so I must write to Kit when I have finished this.
Your Mother and I then decided to go to Barnsley. I had to go for my watch and your Mother wanted a net for the young chicks and we both wanted to see Leslie Howard in “Escape to Happiness”.
The film was very good – I wished that you were here to see it with me. The last film I saw in Barnsley was with you. Do you remember Darling – it was “My Gal Sal”.
When I arrived home Mother and Dad had arrived. They both look much better for their holiday and quite brown. They had good weather too. They both wish to be remembered to you. Vera has started writing you an Air Letter but I do not know when she will get it finished.
I will write you an Air Letter to-morrow or Monday. I think that this will be my last ordinary letter until after September. They will be Air Letters that you will get. I really must get down to some hard work once I get back. I still have the long list of work that I brought home facing me. I must make an attempt to do it before Wednesday.
Father is very merry tonight, he has heard that the Grimethorpe Male Voice Choir, of which he is a member, has passed a B.B.C. audition. He has been down to the Institute with several others to celebrate.
Good-night Darling, all my love, always yours, Grace. Xxxxxxxx
