Grimethorpe

Monday  12.7.43

My Very Own Darling,

Once again I write to you from “mucky Grimy”.

I wrote you an ordinary letter this week-end which was posted this morning.  I could not get hold of any Air Letters in Abertillery.

The most thrilling part about coming home again was that there were two letters waiting for me from you and the lemons.  The lemons had arrived Wednesday morning.  Mother said that five were in good condition and six had to be used immediately as they were getting soft.  Only two were bad.  The parcel too was in fairly good condition.  I think that we ought to say thank you to the Army Post Office for delivering the goods and you know how I would like to thank you for them don’t you, Darling?  As it is I am afraid that you will have to be satisfied with a thank you on paper and one large extra kiss on the end of my letter.

Mother said that Dad has been ill in bed (I did mention it in my ordinary letter)  I am pleased to say that he is quite better now.  I think it must have been the lemon juice he had which cured him – what do you think?

Vera keeps reminding me that it nearly midnight – just a hint you know that she would like the light out so I guess I will have to say Goodnight, my love.  How I wish we could say it in our own special way – how far away it all seems now but those evenings (or nights, as you wish) are still very clear in my memory Darling.  All I wish for now is the time when there will be no need to say Good-night.

According to your ordinary letter you did not expect it to arrive until the end of my holidays but it arrived on Saturday last, together with your Air Letter written on June 25th.

So you thought that you would get a nasty crack in about my neck did you?

As you remark – it is a good job you are not here or I might set upon you with my rolling pin (yes, I have one).

Another nasty crack too in your letter was that you hoped I might not set the local gossips tongues wagging whilst I was at home this year.

Well, well, so that is what you think is it?  It is amazing what some girls will do when their boy friends' backs are turned, isn’t it?  Who knows – I might turn out to be one of those girls.

Do you think that you could send some of that extra heat you are having over here?  I am afraid that the last few days – to-day in particular, have been far from holiday weather.  However, I hope that it improves for Mother & Dad next week.

Until next time, Darling, all my love, ever yours, Grace  xxxxxxx X
