Grimethorpe  20-7-43

My Own Darling,

After having paid a visit to the local “bug-hut” and having paid a visit to number 19  I thought that I would write a few lines to you.

The following is Kit’s impression of Grimethorpe Empire Palace:- “Upon entering the said building my eyes immediately flew to the opposite wall which was green and mouldy.  Whilst sitting in the “dress circle” I looked down upon the “orchestra stalls” with the elite of Grimey in them and I had an urge to join the children in the “fourpennies”.  They were having a good time playing “tigs” as only Grimey kids can.  Then the picture started amid “whoops”.  The show continued, prompted periodically by a deep male voice which boomed forth “Be quiet”.  The place has an aroma of its own which is undistinguishable.  However, I managed to escape without collecting any live-stock which I am sure must roam around such buildings.”

Of course, I quite agree with Kit’s version of the place but I bet you wish you were here to sit in it.

Vera says that she could add a few adjectives to Kit’s description but I have just informed her that if she does not stop passing rude remarks whilst I am trying to write she will get a book at her head.  That seems to have settled her!!  (Some hope of that).

Your Mother is taking John, Janet, Kit, your Father and myself to Hemsworth Grammar School to-morrow – it is sports day.  John and Janet have insisted that I really must see your photos.  A treat in store – what?

You know Darling, it is a hopeless job trying to write with Kit and Vera in the room – Kit is sitting in the middle of the room trying to get undressed and the antics she is going through – it really is a scream.  If you were here I might tell you but I cannot possibly write it on paper.  It would not pass the Censor.

Kit says I have to tell you that this is not all my own work but a joint effort and that she is doing her job of protector alright.  She finds it slightly strenuous at times but thinks she will manage to pull through.

Of course – you don’t believe that, do you Darling – I really am a good girl!!  I still love you my own as much as ever but as it is now nearly 1 a.m. I really must say “Good-night”.

Happy dreams Darling.  Your very own, Grace   xxxxxxxxx

This postcard shows the 'Picture Palace' in Grimethorpe, as building works were being completed.  At the time the photo was taken there was no access to the steps up to the doors and the pile of stone in the background shows that the exterior works were not yet finished. The building in the background, centre left, is Grimethorpe Working Men's Club.
