My Very Own Darling,
There’s been little change in my life since I last wrote to you on Saturday, but I can’t let the week-end pass without writing to you. I don’t think this will be the usual length however, so don’t hope for too much.
I am anxiously looking forward to your next letter to know that you are up and about again. I have thought of you time and again since I got your letter saying you were in bed - & I must confess worried a little about you. I don’t like you being ill more especially as I am miles away. So don’t do it again will you?!! I sent you a cable as soon as I received your last letter. I hope you got it O.K. & that it didn’t take too long.
On 28 Aug too I woke up with a jolt to the realization that in a few days time it was John & Janet’s birthday & so I sent them a cable each, but I doubt if it would arrive in time.
Yesterday I had a walk round to the photographers to see if I had any chance of getting the photographs I mentioned some time ago. He promised me them in about three days time & so if they are fit for publication, I will send one along immediately!!
The most unusual thing that has happened since I wrote is that it rained to-day – the first I have seen since April! I am certainly glad (after having walked through the town) that it doesn’t rain more regularly for the wetness has brought to light all sorts of unpleasant smells.
The news on the wireless makes it quite clear that we are still giving Italy a pounding from the air & here we have ample proof – if proof is needed – for a formation of 50 bombers well escorted by fighters has just winged its way over my office heading in the right direction.
I am pleased to say I have never seen such a large number of bombers from Germany advancing on us. The most they seem to send over here at a time is about six. Such a number broke the serenity of the Sunday afternoon yesterday when they appeared out of the clouds to cause a spot of commotion for a couple or three minutes. It was only a “tip & run” raid however, not a concentrated effort such as we have been putting up just lately. The latest raids on Berlin must have been terrible. If we keep inflicting such heavy punishment on their towns they will find great difficulty in getting through the coming winter.
I have been wondering if they have decided upon a date for your examination yet. You promised to let me know, just out of interest – not that I can help the outcome in any way! (What did you day, “I wish you could!!")
Well, Darling, there’s nothing fresh to report now so I am sure you won’t mind me repeating an oft-written theme and that is to tell you how much I love you & miss you. Far from getting used to being separated from you, after six months away, each day that passes seems to get harder to live through without seeing you.
Still there’s a happy thought in knowing that the day when we shall be together again is nearer - & I firmly believe is now in sight.
So I’ll say “Au Revoir” for this time Angel. Keep my love - & keep well Darling.
All my love, yours Stan xxxx
