My Very Own Darling,
To-day was one of the days which have been so few & far between of late – the day when a letter arrives from you – and you know what that means to me, don’t you, Dear? Life takes on a brighter hue and all the depressions are put at one side as visions of what is waiting in the future for both of us occupy my whole thoughts.
Your letter was No. 62, dated 7 Oct 43 so it didn’t take too long everything being considered did it? There are signs of the mail position picking up a bit now. I hope it does.
It was grand to read about the plans you have for the future & to hear you have just finished another table cloth when I read of you making all these preparations, Darling, it gives me one big thrill, but also makes me sorry that I can’t be in England & able to give some material help to the job of collecting for the future. How irritating (to put it mildly) it is being so far from you. As you remark in your letter, however, this absence is one of the finest tests our love will ever experience & I will say I am proud & thankful that it has stood the test of time so well, aren’t you? In our case I am sure that absence has made our hearts grow fonder and made our plans for the future more exciting.
There’s not much personal news of any interest, the highspot of last week was the fact that I had my first hot bath since landing in Africa in March! Did I enjoy it. I lolled about in the hot soapy water until it grew cold & then had to hurry to get warm again. It is amazing what a luxury a real good hot bath is after months of cold showers & sea bathing!
I was wondering the other day how much longer it will take for the stockings I sent you to arrive. They should be about at Nottingham by now. Don’t forget to give me your honest opinion of them when they do arrive – even if its bad!
I managed to fit in two visits to the pictures last week. One of the films was a Mickey Rooney film “A Yank at Eton” which provided me with not a few laughs. I think he’s a grand actor, don’t you.
A letter from Mother told me that my Dad had had a bit of promotion at the Colliery & is now Surface Manager – don’t know what it entails but it sounds good doesn’t it!
She also mentioned that your Grandad was getting weaker & wasn’t expected to last much longer. It’s a pity one has to grow old, Darling, isn’t it?
I wish you and I could remain as happy & carefree as we were last year, but the precious months are ticking by at an alarming rate aren’t they. I hope the war doesn’t last much longer, such a lot of our precious time is being wasted.
Impatience is showing itself again, impatience to hold you in my arms again and to be able to tell you how much I love you Angel. Yours Stan xxxx
