My Very Own Darling,

I am on duty all night to-night and so I thought I would start this air letter to you.  I shan’t finish it until to-morrow for the air mail delivery for this week has just arrived and so to-morrow there may be a letter from you.  Had one from home tonight in which Mother mentioned that you had received the stockings I sent to you.  I am interested to know what you thought of them, but I shall probably find out to-morrow and also get your opinion of that orrible effigy the Italian photographer claimed was me!  Mother apparently thought it was O.K.

I haven’t heard from you since I wrote an ordinary letter to you four nights ago and haven’t done anything startling, so consequently news is very scarce.

I was thinking about the past last night and realised that last year at this time I was looking forward to a leave and to seeing you, especially as I had something to straighten out with you.  Remember?  Yes we had our first (and I hope our last) crisis!!  But you don’t like me reminding you, do you, so I’ll change the subject.  Before doing so, however, Darling, I will say how terribly pleased I am that you decided last year at this time to give Florrie Nightingale (that old enemy of mine) the boot good and proper!!  I can’t imagine what life out here would have been like without having you to think of and the knowledge that you will be waiting for me when I set foot in England again.  Ah Me!  That’s a grand thought.

To get back from the land of dreams to reality ..... I almost bought you some face powder and lipstick the other day, but realising that I hadn’t the foggiest notion what shade to get, I decided to wait until I know the correct “griff”.  So if you tell me what shade you use and if you are a good girl, you might find the postman bringing some along one of these bright mornings.  Don’t forget to let me know, will you?

And now, I’ll save the rest of the space until to-morrow after the postman has called.  Good night, my Darling.

Friday evening

The postman appears to have deserted me again.  Two more days have passed & he hasn’t given me a call so I’ll finish this letter tonight.  Nothing untoward has happened since I started this letter, except for the fact that I have been having a gay time, i.e. going to the pictures twice running!  One of the films was “Who Done It” the Abbot & Costello film, which I remember you saying you had seen & enjoyed.  It was a good laugh.

We had some good news today.  For the next three weeks we’re going to get a double issue of air letter cards to enable us to write more people for Christmas, but of course, Darling, you know who’ll get my extra ones, don’t you?

Have you heard when you are going on night duty yet & whether you will manage to get home for Christmas?  Remember the scramble we had to get home together for New Year & all the adventures?

Well, Darling, that’s all for now.  Will write again immediately I get your letter.

All my love, always yours, Stan xxxx

P.S.  Letter just arrived 11 a.m. Saty!  Thanks a lot.  News was quite thrilling.  Will write again tonight.  Love SB
