My Very Own Darling,
I arrived back her at 2 p.m., my train being exactly three-quarters of an hour late.
Coming back from nights-off is always pretty awful but it can never be as bad as when I used to come back after leaving you.
When I reached my bedroom there was an air-letter waiting for me and your Christmas Airgraph. Your air-letter was written on the fourth of December telling me that you had just had my good news about my Finals.
I know that you would be as thrilled as I was about it but what thrills me more each time I think about it is the thought that it is one more stepping stone in the right direction.
18-12-43 1.30 p.m.
Darling, in your letter you say that you are pleased that I can stick this waiting. How about yourself? It must be as much of an ordeal for you as it is for me.
Darling, the fact that we are waiting for each other proves to us that we must really love each other. The fact that somebody loves you and cares makes this waiting so much easier, doesn’t it?
Sometimes I wonder if this war will ever end and then I think that things cannot go on like this for ever. I only hope that the “better world” which we are fighting for really does materialise.
Thursday morning a sea letter arrived for me. Kit had posted it on. I will write one back in answer to it. There is too much to answer on one of these small letters.
The 45 pages have not yet arrived. I am still anxiously waiting for it or perhaps I should say them. I only hope that they all get through.
Thank you for the “Union Jack” which arrived quite safely in with your sea letter. So – you are front page news now! Getting on in the world, aren’t you?
I took it up for the all to see at 19’. John was quite excited about it and gave me a long account about all the papers you had sent him.
If I do not stop now there will not be room for me to say that I love you Darling.
‘Bye my Precious.
Your own, Grace xxxxxxxxxxxx
