My Own Darling,
Your letters dated Feb 2nd and Jan 6th (a sea letter) arrived yesterday.
Thank you for all the birthday wishes Darling.
I am so glad that my letters have started arriving regularly again. I know how anxious I get if when your letters are delayed so I have an idea how dreadful it must be for you – stuck out there too.
There is only one more night for me to work and then – home. Home for six whole days and nights. Of course with Ivy and Kit being off as well, life will be a bit more varied than it usually is the days at home.
You might be interested to know that I have been very unpatriotic recently and bought myself a new dress. It is of a sunshine yellow and black checked material, open neck style, buttons all the way down the front! and has two pleats in the front, one centre back and short sleeves. Hope you can gather what it looks like from that description.
I have also been patriotic in one way – though really it was coupon shortage, and had my lilac coloured coat dyed nigger brown.
It has taken the dye very well and with a few alterations will look almost new.
Hope I am not boring you by telling these things. Just let me know if I do and I will search my brain for something more interesting to tell you.
By the way, Kit and I had our photographs taken this morning. We have to go for the proofs next week. I do hope that they turn out all right. If mine is presentable I will send you one as soon as ever I get them.
It may reach you some time before next Christmas – they are developed so quickly these days!
The one advantage of being on this ward is that we can get on to the roof. It has a flat top, so if ever we feel like a breath of fresh air and we have five minutes to spare, one nurse stays on the ward whilst the other two take a stroll. We managed to up there this morning at 4 a.m. The stars were twinkling and everything seemed so quiet and calm. How I wished you were there with me – “away from the madding crowd”.
Ah my dear – I love you more and more each day. Yours always, Grace xxxxxxxx
