3-1-44

1 a.m.

My Own Darling,

I have not as yet got used to writing ‘44 instead of ’43.  1943 was quite an eventful year, wasn’t it?  I wonder what this new year will bring. I think that this is also going to be an eventful year.

A year ago to-night Darling we were together – at the front of a blazing fire.  I guess I was looking at the clock and telling you to go but not wanting you to go at all.

Tonight I am sitting at a desk writing this to you and we are miles and miles away.  We neither of us thought last year that you would be somewhere in Italy – though we did wonder.

It makes me wonder where we shall both be next year at this time.

In one of your recent letters you seemed quite worried about the fact that I might be joining the Q.A.I.M.N.S.  You have not need to worry – yet.  I shall be finishing my four years here before I do anything else.  That will be in Nov: 1944.

I am rather busy on the ward at the moment.  There are about six very ill patients and I have thirty-one other patients as well.

My senior pro’* has gone for her nights off and I certainly miss her.  She is such an excellent nurse too.  Not only is she a good nurse but she is a charming girl and very intelligent.

It is not often one meets beauty and brains together, is it?

Kit is very busy these days too.  She is doing Casualty at the moment.  She has not had time for her meals these last two nights.  We both go for our nights off on Jan: 20th.  I should have gone on the 6th of this month but owing to “unforeseen circumstances” I am not able to go until the 20th.  I guess I shall spend the greater part of them in bed as I did last time.  I get lazier and lazier!  Over Christmas though I spent only an average of three hours in bed each day so I shall have to make up for lost sleep.

No more this time Darling.  Both time and space are small so Au-Revoir.

All my love, as always, your own, Grace   xxxxxxx

* "My senior pro"  The trainee nurses were known as 'probationers', usually shortened to 'pro'.
