My Own Darling,
Two letters from you this morning and they were only written on Dec: 26th and 29th. Good going, isn’t it?
I was pleased to hear that you had a reasonably good Christmas. You did not manage to get drunk then? Though I suppose you had nothing to get drunk on!
So, you are jealous of me taking your brother out, are you? Well, well, when you arrive back in England once again I might take you to see some of my relations – if you behave yourself!!
That will be the day – when you return to England! My Darling, I am longing for that day more than I have ever longed for anything. When you receive this letter nearly eleven long months will have gone by. I am afraid that often ask myself – how much longer? Then I console myself with the thought that we are lucky compared with some people.
So you had the unpleasant job of packing up a dead soldiers belongings did you? Perhaps you realise how it feels to watch somebody die – especially young people and realise that there is nothing one can do to save them. It makes one furious to think that some men spend their time thinking of new weapons of destruction when there is such an enemy as disease to fight. Their brains could be put to much better use.
I guess that me saying what I think about these things will not help any.
The Anterior Poliomyelitis* that you mentioned is just the correct name for Infantile Paralysis. You spelt it correctly too. Where did you see it written?
By the way, in one of your letters you passed various remarks about my views upon families. What was the bit you crossed out? You crossed it out very well too. You did not intend me seeing what written underneath. Being very curious by nature – I would like to know, please tell me!
It is now early morning on the ninth. A night does go quickly when one is on duty – and when one is off – at times.
I think that there is just enough room left for me to say
that I love you, Darling, and that I am yours for always. Love Precious, Grace xxxxxxxx
