My Very Own Darling,
I was beginning to get annoyed with the Postal authorities for today was the ninth without a letter from you. My good temper was restored this evening, however, when your air letter of the 8th turned up. I suppose I didn’t ought to grumble, did I? Ten days from England isn’t bad going.
Yes, Darling, eleven long months have rolled by very slowly since we said “Au Revoir” one winters afternoon on Doncaster Station and although you say you are frightened to think of the many more months which lay between us & our goal, I think you will admit life seems very much brighter now than it did to us eleven months ago. Anyhow, yet another few months hence & things will look brighter still. Let's hope so Angel, anyway, for I dream of nothing save you and our great adventure upon which we are going to embark once I am back in good old England.
I thought my crossing out a sentence in one of my recent letters would arouse your curiosity!!! What actually happened was that I wrote something down quite innocently & when I read it again later found it could be read two ways – one of them not very nice – so consequently I crossed it out. Sorry Darling, I won’t tell you what it was, so you will be even more curious than ever, I suppose. Just like a woman!
I’ve just finished supper in the Mess and I thought of you whilst I was there. We had one of your favourite dishes – Marmite sandwiches!! The grub has been splendid of late. There must have been a ship in this week, too, for four (ow! awful grammar) days running we have had fresh meat & quite a nice change too.
An embarrassing thing happened yesterday lunchtime. My pal and I were having our usual lunchtime stroll along the sea wall & we both remarked that the sea was a bit rougher than usual. We had just got the remark out of our mouths when a damned great wave came over the top & swamped the both of us & we had to go crawling back to our billet right through the centre of the town looking like a couple of drowned rats with all the “Ities” staring at us. Were our faces red? Yes. You may think it a laughing matter, but I can assure you we didn’t.
Don’t worry, however, I haven’t caught pneumonia or anything like that. I am doing as you told me to Darling in a recent letter and am saving myself all for you. A lot of things go bad through being kept, but others improve through keeping. I wonder which category I am in?
As always Dearest, you have
my love. Yours, Stan xxxxxxxxxxx
