Wednesday, 2 February, 1944 - Grace's 23rd birthday, and letter to Stan

My Own Darling,
When I arrived back here thirty-six hours ago, waiting for me was a letter from you and also a parcel.
First of all I will thank you for the parcel. Darling, I have not seen such powder and lipstick for a long, long time. The lipstick I have tried and find that it is just right. The powder I have not opened yet but I think that it will be the right shade. Thank you, Darling. As I have told you before – you are spoiling me – but I like being spoiled – who doesn’t?
Your letter was dated Jan 15th. I was sorry to hear that you had to retire to bed for a few days with a cold. I am glad that you are feeling yourself again. Now Darling – look after yourself!!! That Italian climate seems rather erratic. If you catch another cold just send an S.O.S. to the G.H.N. and I will see what can be done about coming right over and nursing you – how would you like that?
Maybe you would not like it as I should be very firm with you. No visitors would be allowed, your diet would be fluids only – excluding alcohol and no kissing allowed – it is infectious.
Can you imagine us seeing each other again after all these long months and not even kissing each other?
No! perhaps it would be wisest if I stayed in England until you return. I often dream about that day. Just to be in your arms again and hear you say “I love you, Angel.” And then I will tell you just how much I love you, Precious, and how very much I have missed you.
In four days time it will be just two years since we first met. What a lot has happened in those two years. I have grown to love you Darling as I never thought it possible to love anyone. You mean so much to me. If only the next year proves to be as eventful as the last two have been (in the right direction) then it may not be so very long before we are putting into operation all the things we have hoped and dreamed about. Just think Darling, by Feb: 1945 we may be together again. We can but hope and pray. Until that day Dear!
All my love, Grace
