My Very Own Darling,
Well I arrived back yesterday from my 400 mile trip, very dusty & with a few bruises for a combination of a 3 ton lorry & the Italian roads makes one's ride a bit rough at times.
There’s not a lot I can write about regarding the trip. The countryside looked very beautiful & fresh, the apple, peach & cherry blossom adding a dash of colour to the fresh springlike greenness of the fields. There were still traces of snow left high on the peaks of the mountains but generally speaking, everywhere was bathed in sunshine & looked very pleasant.
I spent one night sleeping in a castle which was very cosily situated, snuggling in a pretty valley and sheltered on three sides by high forbidding hills. It was a grand experience to fling open the window of the room in the early morning & look over the castle battlements, its crumbling grey stones warmed by the early morning sun. Standing there I let my romantic imagination stray over its long history visualizing all the many colourful scenes the castle must have witnessed.
One could almost sense a re-awakening in the little village which, a little lower down the valley, was half hidden in firs & pines, and beyond that the sun struggling up from behind the hilltop was adding all its many tints to the already colourful scene.
The scent of the pines wafted in on the morning breeze, seemed a real “livener” & one felt greedy as one took great gulps of it.
I wished you could have been by my side to share the grandeur of that scene, Darling. I am always wishing you were with me of course but more so when I am admidst such beauty as I have tried to describe above. Had I been able to have stretched out my arm & feel all the thrills that I do feel when you come close to me I should really have thought I was in heaven & then as far as I would have been concerned time could have stood still!! You and me midst all that beauty – what more could we have demanded, Darling?
The best part of the outing however, was the returning to my billet for there to welcome me was a letter from you.
So you think you’ll be an awkward pupil to teach swimming to, eh? Well, Darling I remember something else that you took a bit of persuading to do, but I managed in the end! Remember? I am impatient about lots of things & people, Darling, but not about you, so I promise I won’t tease you – at least not whilst you’re in the water. Once you are out however, I won’t promise .........!
Well, the letter you wrote to
me was written in bed & that’s where I am.
Shall have to settle down now, Dear, so for tonight I’ll say “Night
Night”, & give you via A.P.O. a big goodnight kiss. Always yours, Stan xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
