My Very Own Darling,
It is getting very late but I thought I would write a few lines to you before I go to sleep.
I’ve just finished clearing up one or two odds and ends in the office and have just completed the packing of any bits and pieces ready for my journey to Naples tomorrow morning.
I am really looking forward to this holiday of mine. Only two things stop me from being completely happy. First, I wish that you were coming with me Darling, and secondly, for the next seven days I shall not be getting any letters from you – and as you know, Darling, your letters mean everything to me out here. Still I don’t suppose we can have everything, can we, & besides it will be nice to come back and find two or three to say “Welcome Back”. I am hoping that by the time I get back from Naples your latest photograph will have arrived. I am so looking forward to it.
I was pleased to get a letter from you this afternoon before I left the office. As you say, Darling, perhaps we shan’t be lucky enough to see all the sights I have managed to see in the past 18 months, together. But, however, anywhere will be heaven as long as we are together, won’t it?
It is very warm & sultry tonight and I am writing this sitting under a mosquito net. Terrible nuisance these nets, but better to crawl under one & not get malaria, I suppose. Nets and mosquitoes & rotten smells are things that are never mentioned in the travel books. They make travelling seem less glamourous.
The Sergeants are arranging a dance for Saturday evening & inviting the local girls. Haven’t the faintest idea what it will be like, but I can’t imagine it being much of a success for nobody in the Sergts’ Mess can speak more than three or four words of Italian. Of course, I shall miss it.
Well, Dear, I’ll write again in a couple of days time to let you know how I am faring &, although I am not going to make any rash promises, I’ll see if I can break my record & send you a really long letter all about NAPLES.
I’ve just room left to tell
you how really much I love you Darling.
I am missing you so much. Hurry
up the day when I can hold you close again & say those three magic words “I
love you”. Always yours, Stan xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
