My Own Precious Darling,

I have just returned from my week-end at home.  Usually I do not mind coming back but somehow I did not feel like coming back at all to-day.

I always miss you more than ever when I am at home but I feel closer to you there than here.  I suppose that that is because most of the time we have spent together has been at Grimethorpe.  Whether I am walking down the road or in the house or wherever I may be at Grimethorpe I always feel that there is something missing.  Yes, I know what it is – your presence.  Darling, I do miss you.  I long to have you by my side to be able to touch you again and feel the thrill of your touch, to be able to put out my arm and slip it through yours or – as the evening became darker to walk along with your arm round my waist.

I often lie in bed at night and think of those exquisite hours we spent together after all decent citizens were in bed.  May they soon be repeated!

As Kit came in last night to have her usual cup of tea before retiring and as she did not leave me until nearly midnight I am afraid that this letter did not get finished.  However, I have not had a very busy day on the ward so here I am, writing to you, Darling, and awaiting the arrival of the night nurse.

Two of my nurses have just returned from an exam.  Poor things!  I always feel sorry for them.  Thank goodness my exams are behind me.

Let me talk about more pleasant subjects.  This afternoon on the wireless I heard the “Intermezzo” from “Escape to Happiness”.  It is beautiful music, isn’t it?

By the way, you might be interested to know that while I was at home I did a little more sewing towards my “bottom drawer”.  Nothing very exciting, Dear – just tea towels.  Hope you do not think I am soft – telling you these things.  Whether you do or you don’t Darling – I think that you will still love me just as much.  I am deeply in love with you.

Bye Dear.  Ever your own, Grace  xxxxxx
