Grimethorpe

2-7-44                                                                      (143)

My Own Precious Darling,

Once again I write to you from dear, old, Grimethorpe.  It is Sunday night and I am sitting in Vera’s room by the window, writing this letter.  There is community hymn singing on the wireless and the usual “Sunday atmosphere” everywhere.

I did not arrive home until Friday night – 9 p/m to be exact.  I had not even time to post your last letter before I left Nottingham so had to post it in Grimethorpe.

Yesterday was an uneventful day – I did not do much.  Late in the afternoon I took Vera up to 19’.  I was very pleased to see your Father up and toddling around but your Mother was in bed.

She thought she had lumbago so decided to have a day in bed.  I think myself that she has a touch of Nephritis (kidney inflammation) but as I neither a doctor or diagnostician it is not for me to say.  However, she is looking after herself I think that she will be alright.

Father and I sat up until about midnight last night discussing the latest war developments and before we retired decided to get up at 7 a/m and go for a walk before breakfast.  Our good intentions were not carried out – we “overslept” and 10 a/m found us just getting up.

I have spent to-day getting a few things ready for my journey North to-morrow.  Kit and I leave Doncaster at 12.45 p/m and arrive in the famous city of Edinburgh somewhere around 7 p/m.  I do not feel particularly excited at the thought of going.  Maybe Darling if you were going with I should feel different about it.

Wherever I go I always long to have you by my side, Darling.  I still miss you just as much as I did when you first left England.  In fact – I miss you more if that is possible.

By the way, I must tell you – Father made me a baking board for my “bottom drawer” yesterday.  Vera said that as it weighs more than my rolling pin I will have to use it instead of the rolling pin when we quarrel!!  Cannot see that happening, can you Darling?

‘Night Precious.  Love Grace xxxxx
