G. H. N.

22.10.44                                                                   197

My Very Own Darling,

I am writing this on my last evening at the G.H.N.  I can hardly realise that it really is my last night here.

My bedroom at the moment is hardly recognisable, as I have just been trying to pack.  I thought that I had taken the majority of my belongings home but when I started packing I realised that I had not.

Yesterday the postman brought me two letters from you, one of which you had written before the three which I received the previous day.  Where it has been hiding I do not know.

I did intend answering them tonight and then I realised that I had put them with some more of your letters at the bottom of my case.  Just like a woman, isn’t it?

This morning I seemed to spend saying Good-bye to people.  I hate saying Good-byes don’t you?

24-10-44

I did intend finishing this letter last night but when I came to look for it I realised that I had left it in the case which I had left at Cudworth Station.  Seem to be getting very absent minded these days.  It must be because I am in love!

I was very thrilled when I arrived home to find an air-letter waiting for me from you.  Next best thing Darling to finding you waiting for me.

You know, Dearest, now that I should be working so near to home I shall miss you more than ever, if that is possible.

Oh Darling, when is this so and so war going to end?  Sometimes it seems to me that it will just go on and on indefinitely.

I guess that I ought not to write like that to you – stuck away “somewhere in Italy”, miles and miles away from people and things which you love.

I am an impatient person at times and very selfish where my love for you is concerned.

Well, here I am, almost at the end of the page and I do not seem to have told you anything at all.  However, I do know of one way of overcoming that obstacle – I will start another letter to you, therefore I will not say Good-bye but just au-revoir and commence another letter.

Love Grace xxx
