Nurses Home
General Hospital
Nottingham

3-10-43

My Very Own Darling,

I have just finished washing my hair and am sitting at the front of a lovely fire, drying my hair and writing this letter to you.  The wireless is on and playing “Schubert’s Serenade”.  I think that it is a lovely piece of music, don’t you?

It is such a luxury to sit at the front of a fire as we are not allowed fires until the first of this month.

I am feeling very thrilled to-night as Eric is coming to see me to-morrow.  I would have liked to have gone home but I seem to have had so much extra time recently that I do not like asking for more.  Sister is also back on duty and giving extra time off rather upsets her.

However, Eric and Bessie are coming down here to see me.  They will stay at Stapleford with my friend Connie, or at least with her parents.  Stapleford, by the way, is about six miles away.

Darling, if only you were coming home too.  Ah me, what a day it will be when you do come home!

As it is now 10.30 p.m. and we are supposed to be out of the lounge at 10 p.m. I had better say Good-night, my love.

7-10-43

I suppose you will receive the air letter I wrote you a few days ago, long before this one.  In it I told you that Bessie and Eric could not get to Nottingham after all.

I have come to the conclusion that if I want to see Eric I will have to wangle a little extra time off and go home.

It is my day-off next Thursday so I will have to approach Sister cautiously and see what I can do.  If Sister is feeling in a good mood she might let me go.  I have enquired about the trains to Cudworth and Doncaster but the only one I could catch would get me to Cudworth at 9 p.m. – too late to catch a bus home.  I should not feel like walking from Cudworth Station after I had been on duty all day.  There is nothing else for it but to go by bus via Mansfield.

Nothing much has happened here since I first started writing this.  We are not very busy in the ward at the moment, and I am still on day duty.

Kit is off sick.  She has had a sore throat and everything that usually goes with a sore throat.  She is much better now and expecting to go back on duty to-morrow.

Enclosed you will find a card I bought the other day.  I rather liked it and thought that you might too.

I must close now Dear.  I will write you an air letter to-morrow.

All my love, Darling, Grace  xxxxxxx
