Grimethorpe 79 – I think
14-12-43
My Own Darling,
Your letter dated 30th Nov: arrived this morning. Kit had posted it on to me.
Yes, I am on my “nights off”. Last Friday night Sister asked me if I would mind having my nights off from the 13th – 17th but on Sunday morning she asked me if I could take them from then until the 16th. I could hardly refuse and anyhow it does not make any difference now that you are not here.
I caught the 2.30 p.m. train from Nott:m and after waiting nearly an hour at Derby arrived in Cudworth at 5.50 p.m. I arrived home at 6.30 p.m. Was I tired! I slept soundly from 8 p.m. until 9.30 a.m. the next day and I still feel tired.
I was very sorry to hear about your Grandmother, Stan*. Your Mother has gone down to Sleaford today. I do not envy her her journey. It is a dreadful day. An awful fog that refuses to clear up. As she left on the 9 a.m. bus to Doncaster she should be there by now.
This morning I had to make that awful journey to Hemsworth for my Emergency Ration Card. Owing to the fog I was two hours later than I expected to be.
Whilst I was waiting at Shafton who should get off the bus from Grimethorpe but John. Just as he was about to leave for school one of his hens got out and when he got it back he had missed the school bus so he took the morning off. As he had an hour and a half to spare he went to Fitzwilliam with me.
As you know my cousin Bernard from Fitzwilliam goes to Hemsworth and I think that John wanted to see where he lived. We did not stay long as John had to get back for school and you know how fond I am of visiting relations.
I was so sorry to hear that you had caught a cold Darling. Now you must look after yourself. Listen to Mother talking! “Wrap yourself in cotton wool” as the saying goes and you know the rest of the words to that.
It is nice to be home again for a short time but Darling – how I miss you.
Everywhere I go and everything I do reminds me of you. Life seems so empty without you.
Darling, I never thought I could love anyone as I love you. This waiting is so very long, isn’t it Dear? I know that we are lucky compared with some people and I also realise just how lucky we are being able to write to each other and to tell each other in this way just how much we care. As I cannot get all I want to tell you on this Page I will write you another letter tonight.
‘Bye Darling – from your own, Grace xxxxxx
