Sunday/Monday, 16 & 17 April, 1944 - Grace's Letter

My Own Darling,

It is rather late to start writing a letter but I thought I might manage to write a page or so before the lights out.

Have had a very busy day on duty – we are in the middle of “take-in” week and for the last two days the cases have just rolled in – most of them suffering from Appendicitis.  I am sure that if we go on at this rate half the population of Nottingham will have had their Appendix removed before next Wednesday!

I have not much news for you at the moment Darling, not having been very far or done anything spectacular in the last week.

As the lights did go out on me last night I am having to finish this letter this morning.  I was very thrilled to receive a letter from you by this morning’s post.

So you will teach me to swim will you, when you come home?

Very well Darling.  I will try and learn but I am warning you – you will probably find me dull and stupid and a most awkward pupil!  I have tried to learn you know but to tell you the truth I get really scared, so if you start any tricks (knowing how you like to tease me) when you give me my first lesson you will never get me in the water again.

You know, Darling, when you tell me about the beautiful blue sea and sky that there is out there, I long to be with you.

Of course, I am always longing to be with you but when I receive your vivid descriptions of places you have been to and things you have seen I long more than ever to be by your side.

Nan, the girl that Kit and I are staying with when we go to Edinburgh, has come down to Nottingham for a month's holiday, so I suppose I shall be seeing a lot of her in the next few weeks.  She is such a nice person.  You will have to meet her – one day.  Her brother has just returned from somewhere out East after nearly 4 years.  Hope it will not be as long for you!  I guess there is no more space Darling so au-revoir.  All my love, Grace   xxxxxxxxxxx
